"Why to Launch a Shuttle... and the
Anti-shuttling Argument"
by Brad Wilders, USS ATLAS, Region 12

Shuttling in STARFLEET is something that should be looked upon with great anticipation and hope however, it is often looked upon with dissent and disgust. There are many reasons why members decide to launch a new shuttle. My top four are:

1.) Friction! Sometimes people just can't work with one another and their is nothing
wrong with that. Different personalities like different things. A chapter should be
diverse in personalities but still a strong team. In this instance shuttling is best if a
ship is bogged down with conflict.

2.) The Ship Just Has Too Many People! If a chapter just gets so large that
managing it is too difficult shuttling can be an awesome experience for everyone
involved. In this case everyone will be able to get involved and have SOMETHING
to do. It would be anticipated that the two chapter's would work closely with one
another allowing everyone to experience new things and contribute great ideas.

3.) The Ship Cover's Too Much Area! There becomes a point in time when any
successful ship has expanded so much and into such different corners of a central
area that launching is the practical thing to do for all members involved. When people are forced to drive vast distances to events and functions it becomes a strain for them to be in STARFLEET, and STARFLEET is meant to be fun. Like the above reason this shuttling experience should be of great joy for all! A sister ship to get together with on special occasions!

4.) Different Philosophies! Like friction between members of a ship sometimes members have different visions of what STARFLEET stands for. One group of members might not want to change anything, is afraid to try something new and is lax on responsibilities (providing newsletters, having functions and events, etc) while other members may want to try new things, get more people involved, and take a ship in a new direction! You just have to shuttle because the ship just isn't fun anymore!

The bottom line is if STARFLEET isn't fun people have the power to make it FUN! I am not saying that shuttling is the answer for everything but if you've tried every venue to resolve differences, combine ideas, manage a large ship and it still isn't fun then shuttling can be the best thing for a group of people. And it should be looked upon as something NEW and EXCITING by everyone, whatever the reason someone is shuttling. In far to many scenarios shuttling is looked upon as bad by chapters in the same area as a new shuttle.

Are they jealous that someone is trying something new? Are they so territorial that they see it like "someone is crapping in their yard?"

If people are going to be forced into doing something they don't like because others may see shuttling as something bad (like crapping in someone else's yard) then why be in STARFLEET if people can't have fun. Shuttling is a unique experience to all involved and hopefully new shuttles can be supported by the ship's around them so that they may be successful.
