"Political Policies..."
by Kurt Pfeiffer, USS CYDONIA, Region 12

There is a new breeze blowing through Starfleet. FADM Mike Smith has shown us that cooperation with the Fleet is possible. At least here in Region 12, Mike Mallote has jumped on the wagon. The next level down would be the various areas of the regions. Some of these area are better at working together than others. However, there is one thing that can keep all of these people from working together.

Politics.

Personally, I cannot abide politics. This is a fan club and we should all work together. The best interests of the group should be put first, not personal likes or dislikes. In the words of Commander Riker, "We don't have to like each other to work well together." I have talked to many people who feel the need to say "This person is a jerk" or "that person is full of it".

Many people will allow themselves to be swayed by this, and to judge people they haven't even met based on the opinion of someone else. What does this accomplish? Who is anyone to tell others who is good and who is not? My response: I don't care.

Are there people in Starfleet that I do not like? Of course. Would I work with them on a project? Absolutely! If it is in the best interests of my chapter and Starfleet, I would put aside any personal differences and do the best job I could. Most people would say the same thing, but could they really do it? I know I can. I have done it before, many times. Political posturing and playing favorites is ultimately self defeating. It serves no purpose and it only serves to make everyone miserable.

Often times when I express this opinion, long time Fleeters will tell me "You're new. Just wait." Bull. That's a lazy attitude. An excuse for not doing anything. If you don't like the way Fleet is, act to change it. But change it because they aren't doing the job, not because you don't like them personally. Learn to be objective in politics. Chapters that adopt Political Policies of "I don't want to work with them, they're ignorant!" are only hurting themselves, Starfleet and Fandom in general. You never know, you might meet someone in the chapter you do like
